VPL, Final Highlights: Salt Pond Breakers win title by 19-run

West Indies International Sunil Ambris led the Salt Pond Breakers won the title by 20 runs in the final of VPL on Sunday.

In the second innings, La Soufriere Hikers could never really take off, losing a wicket per over until the seventh. It became an almost impossible mission for the lower-order batsmen to pull off a recovery act before it was too late with the run-rate steadily climbing.

Salvan Browne and Dillon Douglas, the Hikers’ star top-order duo  failed to deliver on the big day, as they bowed to the ever-building pressure, with just 14 on the board after 2 overs. The Breakers ran through the middle order of their opponent before one could realize, reducing it to 49/7 after 7 overs of play.

The Desron Maloney-led side found a spring in its step when Rayan Williams and Jeremy Haywood took Wesrick Strough, the VPL T10 2020 ‘s highest wicket taker, for a ride in the 8 over. It became too much to ask the duo, with 39 runs still required off the last two.

Earlier, Maloney who had won the toss, decided to bowl first at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent and the Grenadines. The decision initially bore fruit because three of the toughest Breakers had already been sent back to the pavilion with just 30 runs up on board by the fourth over.

However, Urnel Thomas and Donwell Hector, who had been forced down the order, remained calm under stress, taking the side to 60/3. Hector kept battling after Kenson Dalzell struck twice in the 8 over, until he lost his wicket in the final over, to help post a total of 100/6.
