Virat Kohli appalled by Kerala elephant killing tragedy

India is already in the pain of coronavirus pandemic’s misery. People are dying every day, and when the carnage ends, there is no end to it. In the middle of all the turmoil, there has been a shameful incident in Kerala. A pregnant wild elephant in the Silent Valley Forest had fallen prey to human cruelty after a person offered a pineapple filled with firecrackers.

The pineapple exploded in the elephant’s mouth while she’s chewing it. On Tuesday, June 3, a senior official put forth the news. On May 27, at Velliyar River, in Malappuram district, the elephant breathed its last. The post mortem confirmed the animal had been pregnant. The photo shows the elephant stood in the river with her mouth and trunk in the water to relieve pain for hours before she died.

The forest authorities brought two enchanted elephants to take the dead elephant out of the water. The elephant was later taken back in a truck inside the forest for cremation.

Surendra Kumar, the Chief Wildlife Warden, told EFP the pineapple filled with firecrackers is to kill the pregnant elephant. The pineapple exploded in the elephant mouth causing her jaw to be broken and unable to eat later. Villagers in the area also use firecrackers or pineapples loaded with explosives, which act as pressure-activated landmines to protect their fields from wildlife. A related incident happened last month when a female elephant was found in a nearby district with serious mouth injuries, Kumar adding that it died from its injuries also.

Meanwhile, the Indian national cricket team’s skipper Virat Kohli has been heartbroken by what happened. His wife Anushka Sharma had expressed sorrow earlier, and Virat, who is horrified by the horrific incident, was no different. He wrote on his official social media account,

“Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let’s treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts.”

Animal cruelty cases aren’t rare, and the current one shocked many people, including celebrities.
