Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis arrested over fatal road accident

Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka batsman was arrested on Sunday after the vehicle he was driving hit and killed a  64-year-old man early in the dawn, in the Colombo suburb of Panadura. According to police, Mendis is to be produced before a magistrate, likely in the next 48 hours while police undergo an investigation.

The 25-year-old wicket-keeper batsman has played for Sri Lanka in 44 tests and 76 ODI matches. Mendis was one of the players of the national squad which had resumed training after the nation lockdown due to COVID-19. 

Due to the pandemic, Sri Lanka’s international assignments, including a India tour were cancelled.

In Sri Lanka, more than 3,000 people are killed annually in road accidents. 

In 2003, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, the former spin bowler, was crashing into a woman pedestrian and killing her. And, he was given a four-year suspended prison sentence due to this fatal car crash.
