IPL 2020: Delhi Capitals replaces Chris Woakes with South African pacer Anrich Nortje

On Tuesday, franchise of Indian Premier League – Delhi Capitals appointed South African pacer Anrich Nortje as a replacement for England’s all-rounder Chris Woakes, who pulled out ahead of the forthcoming edition beginning 19th September in the UAE.

The team did not specify the reasons for pullout of Chris Woakes. This will be the maiden IPL appearance of Nortje as the 26-year-old, who had been with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was sidelined last season due to a shoulder injury.

Anrich Nortje stated in the media release that, “I am excited to join the Delhi Capitals…there is no doubt this is going to be a massive learning experience for me.”

The speedster, who made his Test debut against India last year, has featured in 6 red ball games, 7 ODI matches and three T20s for South Africa.

Anrich Nortje was named the Newcomer of the Year for 2020 by Cricket South Africa and will join compatriot Kagiso Rabada at Delhi Capitals, coached by Ricky Ponting, former Australian captain.

Chris Woakes was purchased by the Delhi Capitals at the IPL auction  last year  for Rs 1.5 crore.

When the tournament was scheduled to begin in March, the all-rounder had pulled out of the tournament to remain fresh for England’s home test summer.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 13th edition of IPL had been shifted out of India.
