How the club is shaping up for Big Bash League 2020-21 – Hobart Hurricanes

With the player contracting window for the Big Bash League 2020-21 clubs set to open in the coming weeks, we’ve laid out all the specifics of who your team has under lock and key and who might be exploring the open market.

Hobart Hurricanes

Big Bash League 2019-20 result:  Fourth (lost to the Sydney Thunder in the Eliminator final)

Big Bash League 2020-21 squad so far: Jake Doran, Ben McDermott, Scott Boland, James Faulkner, David Moody, Riley Meredith, Matthew Wade, D’Arcy Short

Departures: George Bailey (retired)

Big Bash League 2019-20 squad members off contract: David Miller (SAF), Qais Ahmad (Afg), Nathan Ellis, Caleb Jewell, Jarrod Freeman,  Jake Reed, Simon Milenko, Aaron Summers, Tom Rogers, Clive Rose, Mac Wright

The Hobart Hurricanes have all the building blocks in place. If they find the right pieces to put around them, after some near-misses in recent seasons the club has the makings of a title-winning team.

They unearthed a gem in Nathan Ellis, who went from being uncontracted to becoming one of the best death bowlers of the competition in a single season, but now they have to pay him significantly more to keep him, given the demand for his skills.

But if he comes back and James Faulkner and Riley Meredith are at their best next season, Hobart’s already covered a lot of bases on the bowling front. Qais Ahmad has shown enough to prove that he’s worth getting back too.

Besides that, following George Bailey’s retirement and David Miller’s contract finish, Hobart also has a couple of middle-order vacancies. If they find a few consistent players complementing D’Arcy Short, Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade, their line-up might become even more imposing.
