CPL 2020: Know your team ft. Barbados Tridents

Barbados Tridents defending champions launch their campaign against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 2nd game of the Caribbean Premier League’s eighth edition.

Driven by the red-ball skipper of West Indies, Jason Holder, this season the Tridents will be in search for their third title. After finishing in the first three seasons at 3, 1 and 2 the team based in Barbados went through a small decline in the next three seasons before the trophy was lifted in 2019.

Squad

Retained: Harry Gurney (Overseas), Shai Hope, Hayden Walsh Jr, Ashley Nurse, Jason Holder, Jonathan Carter, Raymon Reifer, Justin Greaves.

Signed: Rashid Khan (Overseas), Marcus Stoinis (Overseas), Nyeem Young, Johnson Charles.

Drafted: Alex Hales (Overseas), Corey Anderson (Overseas), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Overseas), Shayan Jahangir (ICC Americas pick), Kyle Mayers, Joshua Bishop。

Replacements: Mitchell Santner (Overseas)

Strengths and Weaknesses

The Barbados Tridents’ main power must be the multidimensional layers that the team possesses. All eleven players will bat in an ideal XI, and there are at least 26 overs available in play XI.

The batting starts at the top with Afghan batsman wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Johnson Charles, followed by Shai Hope at 3. Stoinis, Carter, Holder and Corey Anderson will make up the middle order. Kyle Mayers, Justin Greaves and the U-19 phenomenon Nyeem Young are all good middle order backups. The lower order includes Nurse, Rashid, Hayden Walsh and Reifer, all of whom have the power to tonk the ball on.

One of the tournaments best, if not the best, spin attacks, Barbados Tridents will bank on their spinners to take them to the top. The spin bowling team comprises Rashid Khan, Ashley Nurse, Hayden Walsh Jr., and Mitchell Santner.

Pace bowling is something that will concern Barbados Tridents a little bit. There is not much experience in the squad beside Holder and Reifer. Nyeem Young is an exciting prospect, but his CPL debut is yet to come. Therefore Harry Gurney, even more than Alex Hales, would be a big miss.
